Ziplining Monks
Rather than talking to monks yesterday, we went to a beautiful temple on a mountain. The winding roads up were a little nausea-inducing, but eventually it was okay. After climbing a bajillion steps past vendors of all kinds, and beautiful dragons, we reach the temple. Inside the temple, we were blessed by a monk and given a good luck bracelet. Apparently we have to break it after 3 days and it will bring us good luck. I'm not really sure how to break it, since it's a bunch of strings knotted together :s Now, when I say blessed by a monk, I mean, we entered the temple on our knees, shimmied up to the monk, and had water thrown on us with an odd bamboo stick kind of thing, while being blessed. Then, we had to hold out our hands so the bracelet could be dropped into them, since monks cannot touch women. When walking out of the temple, to see the grounds, we see the most beautiful view of Chiang Mai city, which is actually huge. Behind the temple is a lovely garden tended to by the monks. The strangest thing while at the temple was meeting a tourist monk on vacation with his friends. For real. He spoke English, took a photo with a Scot named MJ, asked us where we were from and what our travel plans are. It was awesome! I didn't know monks could travel around with their friends. Oh! Also, all of the monks at this temple had awesome tattoos all over.
Sleeping here is difficult. It is so freakin hot in the dorm hostel rooms, and during the day I have to change when we get back cause I sweat through my clothes. It's kind of ridiculous.
Today, we went ziplining! It was actually almost the same as what we did on the elephant day, but instead of riding elephants, we went ziplining. And it was great! It was actually SO cool. There were 19 stations, and a few had two platforms. To get from one to the other, directly below it, you literally were dropped, while strapped to a rope, about 20 feet. It was wicked! And some of them were super long lines, too.
Fun fact: Laundry is done by the kilo, and by little shops all around. 3 kilos cost me 160Baht, which is $5.33. Not too shabby for a whole lotta laundry to be washed and dried. Everything is so cheap here!
Stay tuned!
