BALI

I arrived in Bali at 11:30am, having no idea what there is to see and do besides what I had read in Eat, Pray, Love (totally awesome read, btw). A driver from the hotel picked me up and told me all about Bali: the industry is 80% tourism, 10% culture, and 10% other stuff; there is a national language of Indonesian, as well as hundreds of others for all of the bazillion islands; Bali is a relatively safe place, except for Kuta where one must be careful of pick pocketing; the population is 3.2 million .... plus all the tourists, so most people speak English. He was most helpful.

The Island Hotel is SOOOOO incredibly nice and amazing. There is a wonderful reception area, with delicious food and drinks. There are 2 huge/airy/lovely air conditioned dorms of 12 beds, as well as individual rooms. There is a pool!! It is ideally located away from all the hustle and bustle but not too far away. The staff are all incredibly friendly and wonderful. There is a bar up on a second level above the first dorm. It's perfect. So perfect.

I met some cool people and started wandering around Legian. Bought a dress, ate some mie goreng aka delicious and amazing noodles, went to the beach - it was very sandy and the sand stuck to EVERYTHING. Ick. When I got in the water, I saw a jelly fish and almost got hit by a few surf boards - yikes!

Had a wonderful day with a girl I met at the hostel and one of her friends. We had a driver who took us to a bunch of silver shops, a monkey sanctuary in Ubud (the artistic and cultural capital of Bali), an active volcano beside a beautiful lake. We ate a delicious lunch there with the best tea I have ever had :) Then, we went to an amazing Hindu temple with a sacred pond and fountains you could bathe/pray in. It was truly an incredible day.

The next day I met a CISVer from Australia at the hostel, and with a few others from the hostel we went to a huge temple on cliff guarded by monkeys. These monkeys were really intense: they know to steal things in order to get food like peanuts or bananas. On the way we stopped at a few beautifully incredible beaches. We met up with some more CISVers on the beach for dinner and drinks, and then I switched hotels to meet up with ARM team to help plan ARMM.

I can't get over all of the intricate detail and beauty of this island. It's absolutely breathtaking.
