Akureyri Love

I want to live here. No joke.

This place is just so gorgeous. I spent the day wandering around the quaint little town to enjoy eating whale, tasty ice cream, and beautiful outdoor botanical gardens. I had a perfect date .... with myself. Stopped at the duck pond on the way back... people are encouraged to feed the various ducks and geese. and so many cute lil wee ones! A 3 year old punched my bum, then threw his shoe in the water. It was retrieved, but both of his parents were totally flabbergasted haha. So good.

I am lovin' this so much. I feel so badass, and independent, and free. If I could get a job at this hostel, I would be here in a heartbeat. This place is honestly so incredible. Wow. And I'm not getting hit on! At all!! Woo hoo!!

Day trip to Myvatn (pronounced MEE-vot-en)
Had a guided tour around Iceland's second largest lake, first stopping at Godavoss, Iceland's biggest waterfall. It's nowhere near Niagara, but was lovely nonetheless.
Stop 1: pseudo-craters... Look these up. They are so cool. Basically, there was a huge lava flow 2300 years ago that totally changed the face of this area of Iceland. This particular section of earth behaved like oatmeal. By that, I mean that when you're making oatmeal and put hot water in, the oatmeal tends to bubble up then pop, creating lil craters. Well, the earth did that. Lava and earth and water, oh my!! So cool!!!
Stop 2: Super huge lava rock structures. They actually look like trolls, so it makes sense why so many Icelanders believe in trolls haha. There's a story that 13 trolls called Yule Lads come out at Christmas. 4. Guys actually dress up and come have a bonfire here around Christmas ... You can dance, drink, and take pictures with them!
Stop 3: Small cave full of hot water where many people bathe
Stop 4: Hot springs: this means super hot water flowing underground, mixing with minerals, and spewing rotten egg smell above ground. It's smelly, muddy, but oh so hot!! Actually, this whole area is so warm the snow melts!
Stop 5: Lunch lamb soup and bread made in the ground ... The lamb is incredible, but this bread is wild! All of the ingredients get shoved into a milk carton, then put into a hole in the hot ground for 24 hours to cook! It's dark brown bread, sometimes black, depending on ingredients, and rather sweet. YUM.
Stop 6: Blue Lagoon of the north. So hot and wonderful! Heated from the ground, no silica. Coulda stayed there for hours ... It actually got hotter depending where in the pool you were. And I met some lovely Californians.

All in all, a super lovely, relaxing, and informative day.

Beast of the East - Whitewater Rafting. Me. I went rafting. Say what?!?
I was absolutely terrified before going. One of the hostel staff, Silja, lent me fleece clothes so I could go, and the manager of the hostel, Geir, talked me into it. He ended up coming with me, though, and also lent me some clothes.

So, highlights:
Didn't fall out!!
Bruised 2 knuckles on my right hand
Really cool dry suit that kept me almost totally dry, even when swimming in the water!!
Probably have a job working at the hostel in Akureyri, after having discussed the possibility at length with the manager on the drive up!
The manager fell out twice! Haha

After rafting all day, road tripped back to Reykjavik with a Canadian and 2 Brits who just finished a 3 day rafting adventure. Got to a hostel around 1:30 am, made friends with the guy at the desk who let me stash my bags and nap on the couch instead of paying for a room for 4 hours. Solid.

So basically, I love Iceland and intend to live there at some point in the near future. So everyone should come visit, cause it's incredible!
